Texel Multisession Upgrades for DM-5024 (DM-3024)

In March 1993, Texel started shipping Multisession capable mechanisms. If your firmware (chip inside the device) is not at least version 1.09 then you may not have the latest firmware needed for multisession Photo CD media. Version 1.10 is Texels latest firmware and addresses several flaws in earlier firmware. Use SCSI Probe or HDT Prober to reveal the firmware version. Previous to March 1993, Texel drives usually shipped with version 1.06 or earlier. Texel has a $20 upgrade program for some drives. Call (800) 886-3935 for details.
NEC Photo CD & Multisession Upgrades

If you have a NEC CDR 74 (84) with 1.0 firmware you may want to call NEC for information on how to upgrade it to correctly access Photo CD media. NEC sometimes offers special trade in programs allowing new drives to be purchased at discounted rates if certain older NEC drives were bought. Call (800) 388-8888 for details.
Toshiba Multisession Upgrades

Known Limitations of CD-ROM drives
---------------------------------
1) If a Photo CD cartridge is in an original NEC CDR-84 (CDR-74) drive during startup, your computer will not start. This happens even when no software has loaded (including ours) because it is a hardware problem that hinders SCSI access.
2) If an audio cartridge is in a Philips/LMS CM 214 drive during startup, your computer will not start. This happens even if no software is present (including ours) because it is a hardware problem that hinders SCSI access.
3) A Hitachi CDR 3650U hesitates, but only does so the FIRST time a cartridge is waiting to be inserted. Future insertions are normal. A warning message indicating that the computer is not getting satifactory replies from the CDROM and that a cartridge should be inserted, will appear if your particular Hitachi has this problem. We cannot address this problem better, and it appears to be an insurmountable defect in the device's design. The way our product supports this device is not as detrimental to the computer's performance as drivers from other companies are, but the best solution is to always have a cartridge inserted.
4> Texel DM-5024 (DM-3024) drives, because they are manually ejected, must **NEVER** have their cartridges ejected unless all the mounted volumes are first "ejected" (dragged to the trash) and only then after at least one second of time elapses. Texel mechanisms with firmware version 1.10 and earlier will make the computer hesitate for a moment during insertion and CD spinup. This defect cannot be overcome by software.
5> TEAC mechanisms with firmware version 1.00 may make the computer hesitate for a moment during insertion and CD spinup. This defect cannot be overcome by software.
6) NEC CDR-37's seem to have problems if a "pause" command is issued too soon after a play command, resulting in a "stop" instead of a pause. This will be fixed soon by adding better status logic for errant devices with lagging status, such as some of these NEC drives. This is just a minor problem.
7) CD-ROM ToolKit supports the Pioneer CD-Changer drives by mounting only the disk in the topmost cartridge slot. Future versions of CD-ROM ToolKit will support the multi-disk capabilities of this CD-Changer.
8) New NEC drives, except the CDR-210, offer SCSI-2 commands. This product takes advantage of these commands, and requires them to be present on that model. Therefore, you should not alter the factory set dip switch on the back of the drive from "SCSI-2" to "non SCSI-2" or media will not mount. It is probably already set correctly. The newer drives are : NEC CDR-84-1 (CDR-74-1), NEC CDR 400 (MultiSpin 3xp portable), NEC CDR 500, CDR 510, CDR 600 (MultiSpin 3x series), and NEC CDR 900 (MultiSpin 4x Pro quadruple speed).
9) Some early (pre-February 1994) NEC CDR-500, CDR-510, and CDR-600's (3xe, 3xi) with version 1.00 firmware may seem sluggish when "software" volume is being changed, and on rare occaisions may have audio problems with long audio CDs if "software" volume is frequently adjusted. NEC drives of this series with version 2.00 firmware have no problems. A SCSI probing utility can be used to determine the version, if this is a concern.
Audio Feature Support
--------------------
Most CD-ROM drives lack some of the audio features found in the Apple CD-ROM drive that audio based CD programs expect to be present. Some of these features are not critical, and should not affect overall enjoyment significantly. The features that many drives lack include :
1) Ability to do fast "hardware-assisted" audio scanning.
(Found only on Apple, Pioneer, Sony, and newer Toshiba devices)
2) Independent control of volumes of each audio channel.
(Found only on the Apple CD SC+, Apple CD 150, Apple CD 300, new Sony's, and new Toshiba's)
3) Volume control.
(Present on Apple CD SC+, Apple CD 150, Apple CD 300, Apple CD 300+, Chinon CDS-535, Hitachi CDR-67050, NEC CDR-38, NEC CDR-84-1, NEC CDR-400, NEC CDR-500, NEC CDR-900, Sony 541, Sony 561, Toshiba 3xxx,4xxx, and a few others)
4) Independent control of speaker source (stereo, mono, left only, etc.)
Half of the devices lack total control of all 16 possible configurations specified in Apples CD SC Developer's Guide, 2nd edition. Even some new high-end devices such as the NEC CDR-84-1, and the current Texel DM-5028 lack "mono" playback.
